An ode to Muhammad Ali (1942-2016)

I woke up to the terrible news that one of my all-time heroes has dies. Cassius Clay and later Muhammad Ali embodied so much in this world, it would be strange to find a person that doesn't find inspiration and motivation in his words.

I have not seen him boxing, live anyway. But still he had an impact on my life. The first time I heard of the man, was when my father told me about him. He put on a documentary on his life and I was quite surprised to be honest, because my father is not into boxing. I was 9 and it was Friday, my father started talking about how people would stay awake to watch the big boxing game over in the US. This is were my interest in the man started.

I say 'man', but to me he was so much more than that. He was an athlete, a fighter, a prophet, a legend, an inspirator, a motivator, a politician, a peaceful religious man, a visionary, a philosopher. There are not words enough to describe what this man has done for the world and for me personally. He showed me strength and mental fatigue. He showed that you can stand up if you don't agree with the rules people have made. He showed me that we don't have to follow the typical road our parents, teachers, society, government have picked out for us.

This is one the quotes that really is one of my favourites to be honest:

"I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want."

He was a great personality who was loved by people all over the world. His fight for equality has not only touched the coloured. He was an artist, a visionary for all. For me he's up there with Mandela. And I for one, are very happy to have lived in an age where people remember and know who Muhammed Ali was.

I want to thank this legend for all he has done to the world and he will continue to do this in many years to come.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee
