Season review in 10: #1 VVV-Venlo - SC Cambuur

The season has ended and most football is dead for the summer. It's one of the most horrible weeks for me, because I bloody love football. For me personally it was a great season, with my team being promoted as champions to the 1st tier. I thought it would be a great idea - yes, I genuinely thought so - that I would pick the 10 matches that defined my season. Here's number #1: VVV-Venlo - SC Cambuur.

The first game of the season and I was a bit stressed, still. The previous season we had a great year where we finished 2nd, but couldn't clinch promotion, because we lost in the semi-final of the play offs. I'm still distraught about it and we are bloody champions now. Anyway, I was pretty gassed about the start of the new season. I love fixture day, but this time the start of the season wasn't something I was feeling remotely positive about. First fixture: Cambuur. Relegated from the Eredivisie and believe me, this wasn't going to be easy.

In size, Cambuur is about the same sort of club as VVV, but their support home and away is different to us. Very much so, their fanbase is massive in relation to ours and it made me a bit envious to be honest. The support we had for the first day of the season in a home match, was utterly disappointing. But that's the way it goes around here, no interest in lower league football mates. 4.422 people in an 8.000 capacity stadium, I feel fucking embarassed.

When in the 26th minute the ball hit the onionsack and the score became 0-1, I was furious and the utter disappoint came to surface again. I was thinking, ugh this is going to be such a shite year again. I know this isn't a real positive look on the beautiful game, but I just hate losing man. And I wanted to get in the pole position for promotion from day one. It wasn't even a clean strike, y'know. FFS man. Luckily my misery just lasted for 4 minutes, because we bagged an equalizer then, which came in handy, just 15 short of halftime.

I guess the second half was a bit blurry and REALLY biased on my part. I just wanted my team to win and in that respect, I thought we deserved to be victorious. I genuinely thought we were better, but maybe in my biased mind I had a different perception. But to be honest I really didn't care. It seemed like this game was going to end a draw and that would be a good result, mind. But you always want to win and this winning mentality is embedded in my mind. So, I really needed the win. It's amazing how a whole stadium (or the people attending) comes together in disappointment, passion, desire, commitment. It was fantastic to experience everyone wanting that win and started to cheer on the lads.

When I thought the game would end that way, we got a freekick. 26-ish meters from the goal and Clint Leemans - who we got from PSV Eindhoven - produced a brilliant freekick which landed on the post. First there was disappointment. But the rebound was for Ralf Seuntjens and he made sure all of Venlo would be in a state of euphoria and victory! 2-1!!

If you look at the picture taken when that goal went in, it tells you two different stories. You see the win of VVV, the winning goal, the feeling of understanding how much this means to people. And you see the players of Cambuur protesting, not comprehending and the feeling of losing a very important game. It's fantastic.
I can recall all my emotions and feelings of that specific day and it makes me feel both anxious as euphoric, happy and emotional. Wow. Opening day win against a relegated side, who are rivals and title contenders. Great start!

  9. I think Cambuur is such an interesting team in terms of fanbase. I read somewhere that they have an average attendance of about 7 - 8,000 people per game, which is insane to me considering the size of the club. I'm really enjoying these posts and can't wait to read the next one. :)
